JClic offline
JClic is a Java application, and in the main package distribution it uses the Java WebStart technology, which simplifies the installation process and the automatic programme update. In an ideal situation, where computers have access to Internet, it is advisable to always use this system, as indicated on page download and installation and frequently asked questions of JClic.
This document describes how to use JClic in computers without Internet access and how to add projects to your libraries. We start from a computer which does have access to Internet, and has a CD-ROM recorder.
We will download some files in order to record them on a CD to bring them to the "offline" computers:
- First and foremost, we need an installer of the Java Virtual Machine. You should go to http://www.java.com, download the file clicking manual by clicking Manual Download and select Windows (offline installation), or Linux RPM according to the operating system on which we will install. Download the file and store it in the CD-ROM. The Mac OS X users can skip this step.
- We must also burn in the CD-ROM the file customJMFinstal.exe, which will install the multimedia extensions in Windows, Linux or its equivalent (Mac already has QuickTime).
- At the end of the JClic download page there is an executable installer and a ZIP file with the latest version of the program. We need to download the most appropriate version and save it on the CD-ROM.
- Then go to the activities section of the clicZone and search for projects that want to bring to those “offline” computers. We install them in our computer by clicking on the link for each version.
At the end we have created several folders in the directory of JClic projects. This directory is usually C:\Program Files\JClic\projects on Windows OS, and $home/jclic/projects on Linux, Solaris and Mac. Now we go with the CD to the offline computer. To install JClic follow these steps:
- We'll start by installing the Java virtual machine, which we had downloaded in step 1.
- Then install the multimedia extensions, we obtained in Step 2.
- Then, if it’s a Windows OS, run the installer we had downloaded in step 3. 1.On Mac, Linux and Solaris we must create a folder wherever we want, expand the contents of the ZIP file (with the command "unzip") and create application launchers as explained in the file readme.txt included in the ZIP file.
Almost everything is done. It only requires checking that the applications function properly and install the JClic projects we had downloaded in step 4. To do this we must follow these steps with each of them:
- Launch JClic.
- Go to File menu | Open on the list and select Filetype option "installation project JClic (*. jclic.inst)."
- Browse the CD where we've saved projects, enter the appropriate folder, select the file. Jclic.inst and accept. That will start the installation wizard that will copy the project to the computer and place an icon in the library.
We repeat steps 2 and 3 to install all the projects that we had brought. The last step could be to manage and restructure the JClic project library, placing the buttons in folders.
Very important: It must be kept in mind that JClic is a project still under development and will appear regularly with new upgrades. When using WebStart the upgrade is automatic, but this does not happen if you have followed the process described on this page. It is worth checking the new version releases from time to time, and repeat the installation in “offline” computers when this happens.
